16KREOLMAGAZINEISSUE8January-April2014wasexpandedwiththeintroductionofthenowinfamousapartheidlegislation.ThiswasthetimewhenthedevelopmentofNelsonMandelaasamajoropponentofracialismandhistransitiontoamajorfigureontheworldstagebegan.BythetimeoftheSuppressionofCommunismActin1950MandelahadbeenelectednationalpresidentoftheANCYouthLeague.Thisactintroducedmajorrestrictionsonallprotestgroupsbuthadlittlepracticaleffectsuchwasthegrowingdiscontentwithinthecountry.MembershipoftheANCgrewfivefoldto100000andsetthemonacollisioncoursewiththegovernmentwhorespondedwithincreasingarrestsandlegislationpermittingmartiallawifrequired.GovernmentsuppressionandthetrialsInJuly1952therulinggovernmentusedtheprovisionsoftheSuppressionofCommunismActtoarrestMandelaandhestoodtrialwith20co-accused.Foundguiltythesentencewasninemonthshardlaboursuspendedfortwoyears.ThesentencehadlittleeffectonMandelasincreasingpoliticalrallyingandfurthergovernmentactionsuchasasixmonthbanfromattendingmeetingswerehandeddown.Thesesimplyincreasedhisdeterminationtoimprovethecountryofhisbirth.Afteranunsuccessfulprotesttopreventthedemolitionofanall-blacksuburbinJohannesburgheeventuallyconcludedthattherewasnootheroptionbutarmedandviolentresistance.Furtherbansonpublicappearanceswerefrequentlybrokenandduringthelate1950shismarriagetoEvelyneventuallybrokedownandtheydivorcedamidstaccusationsofadultery.On5thDecember1956Mandelawasarrestedandchargedwithhightreason.Apoliticalandlegalbattlefollowedresultingintheprosecutionwithdrawingtheindictment.NottobeoutdonetheprosecutionsubmittedafurtherchargeofhightreasonbyviolentrevolutionandthetrialcommencedbeingdubbedtheTreasonTrial.Thescrewswerebeingturnedandanincreasinglydesperategovernmentandpolicebecamemoredirectintheirresponsetothevariousdemonstrationsbeingheldincludingshootingdead69protestorsatSharpevilleintheTransvaal.Thisledtomassviolentprotestandthegovernmentintroducedastateofemergencyandmartiallaw.MandelawasarrestedandincarceratedinthelocalprisonofPretoriaonlybeingreleasedwhenthestateofemergencywaslifted5monthslater.Thiswastobeapreludetofurthermuchlongerincarceration.TheTreasonTrialconcludedinMarch1961afteranincrediblesixyearsandMandelawasacquitted.Inthefollowingyearhewaslessfortunate.HewaschargedwithincitingworkersstrikesandleavingthecountrywithoutpermissionfollowinganANCinspiredvisittoEthiopiaEgyptMoroccoMaliGuineaSierraLeoneLiberiaandSenegal.HealsovisitedLondonEnglandtomeetwithanti-apartheidactivistsandpoliticians.ChoosingtorepresenthimselfMandelausedthetrialasashowcasefortheidealsoffreedomfairnessanddemocracybutwasfoundguiltyandsentencedtofiveyearsimprisonment.DecadesofimprisonmentApoliceraidatLiliesleafFarmledtovariouspapersimplicatingMandelainTheSpearoftheNationamilitantgroupthathehadfoundedandledaschairman.ThisgroupwerelatertobecomethearmedwingoftheANC.Mandelawasagainputtotrialchargedwithconspiracytoviolentlyoverthrowthegovernmentandsabotage.Thistrialraisedhisprofilearoundtheworldwithmanyprotestsagainsthissubsequenttreatmentandeventualimprisonmentforlifeafteraguiltyverdict.RobbenIslandprisonwastobecomeMandelashomeforthenext18years.Keptinacellmeasuringjust8feetby7feetandwithastrawmatonwhichtosleephewasconsistentlyharassedbythewhitewarders.Hisdayswerespentbreakingrocksandworkinginalimequarry.Bynighthestudiedforalawdegreemadeslightlymoredifficultbyabanonnewspapersandnewsingeneral.VisitsandmailwerelimitedtooneofeachineachsixmonthperiodalthoughhewasvisitedbyandmetanumberofforeignpoliticiansincludingMPDennisHealeyfromtheLabourYoungNelsonMandela.Photoborntobediscovery.esGaboneseRepublicpostagestampCIRCA1994.PhotoCatwalkerRussianpostagestampCIRCA1988.PhotoCatwalker
