This Tuesday 28th July, Her Excellency Guisell Morales-Echaverry, Ambassador of Nicaragua to the UK, hosted the launch of “Art of the Nicaraguan Revolution”, at the Nicaragua House Cultural Centre, located in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia district.
This was the first in-person post-lockdown event by a Latin American Embassy from the Diplomatic Corps in London; it followed social distancing guidelines in line with UK Government rules and advice, and was the culmination of a series of activities throughout the month (the others were online), to mark the victory of the Nicaraguan Sandinista Revolution on the 19th July 1979.
The art being exhibited showcases a range of beautiful, powerful, poignant, stirring and evocative photographs, posters and murals depicting the periods leading up to and following the Sandinistas’ triumph, primarily the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition seeks to convey, via an ample range of styles, the explosion of popular artistic creativity, optimism, participation and emotions, which are inseparable from the revolution.
Among those whose work is on display is well-known British photographer Grant Fleming, who spent considerable time in Nicaragua in the 1980s, documenting the mass mobilisation of the population to advance and defend the new government’s programme, as well as the effects of the Contra War.
Attendees included diplomats from the London Diplomatic Corps, from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, representatives from Non-Governmental Organisations, artists and members of the Nicaraguan community, among others.
