Our beloved Seychelles archipelago, in the heart of the Indian Ocean is a collection of islands with a rich tapestry of culture, history, and heritage woven over the last century by diverse peoples, traditions, and stories perfectly blending elements from African, European, and Asian influences.
As a young Seychellois Nation, we are proud of our culture, heritage and diversity united by our creole identity as enshrined in The Preamble of the Constitution of Seychelles.
“…. Aware and proud that as descendants of different races we have learnt to live together as one Nation under God and can serve as an example for a harmonious multi- racial society…..”
Article 39 (2) of the Seychelles Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of Seychelles emphasises that ”the State undertakes to take reasonable steps to ensure the preservation of the cultural heritage and values of the Seychellois people”
Two years ago, we launched the National Institute for Culture, Heritage, and the Arts. I spoke of the paramount importance of preserving and nurturing our unique Seychellois identity. The choice to entrust the culture mandate to the Culture Institute was not a dismissal of its value but rather an affirmation of its worth. We sought to create an Institution that stands independent of political agendas, one that would perpetuate our culture, bridge the differences and knit our people together in the spirit of unity, diversity, and inclusion.
The launch of The National Arts and Culture Fund of Seychelles this year, on the 15th of April at the State House, marked another significant step towards this vision. This fund acts as an enabler providing a platform for bringing together cultural, heritage and arts philanthropists for raising funds to promote our rich cultural events, ensuring that Seychelles shines bright on the global stage.
At this juncture, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the Seychelles National Institute for Culture Heritage and the Arts team under the leadership of its Secretary General Mr. David André for his commitment and passion, which have been instrumental in bringing our shared vision to life.
And now, to the latest gem chosen to align with our mission – is the Kreol Magazine Seychelles Edition. The magazine is not just spotlighting our nation but is actively contributing to the mosaic of our cultural identity. This initiative highlights the benefits of public private partnerships and reinforces our belief that culture, when shared and celebrated, becomes the glue that binds communities together, transcending borders.
