Recipes – Bobotie

Originating from South Africa, Bobotie is a rich and aromatic dish with roots that reach back to the Indonesian influence brought by Dutch colonizers. This baked meat pie consists of spiced, curried minced meat topped with a creamy egg custard, and it is often served with yellow rice, banana slices, and chutney. It’s a harmonious blend of sweet and savoury flavours, making it a quintessential dish in South African cuisine.

  1. Prepare Bread Mixture: Soak the bread slices in half of the milk, set aside.
  2. Sauté Meat Mixture: Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the onions until translucent. Add garlic and continue to fry for a minute. Add the minced meat and brown it, breaking up any lumps. Stir in the curry powder, turmeric, sultanas, almonds, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes until all ingredients are well combined.
  3. Squeeze out the milk from the soaked bread and add the bread to the meat mixture, mixing well.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Transfer the meat mixture to a greased baking dish and flatten it with the back of a spoon. Beat the eggs with the remaining milk and pour this mixture over the meat. lace bay leaves on top.Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 35-40 minutes or until the egg mixture has set and the top is golden brown.
