Sitting at the heart of where Jazz was born, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is much more than a music festival; it is a cultural feast. For the uninitiated, the annual celebration has been held at the Fair Grounds Racecourse in New Orleans, Louisiana, every spring since 1970, making it one of the oldest and most revered music festivals in the United States.
The Jazz & Heritage Festival, affectionately known as Jazz Fest, was born out of a desire to celebrate the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. A grand tribute to the Creole culture, the festival has expanded from its original focus on local Jazz and blues to include gospel, R&B, rock, hip-hop, folk, country, bluegrass, zydeco, world music, and much more.
From April 28 to May 7, 2023, Jazz Fest once again opened its arms to a confluence of music, food, and craft enthusiasts from across the globe, each day more vibrant than the last. This year’s Jazz Fest was not merely a comeback; it was a resounding affirmation of the spirit and resilience of the New Orleans community and the world as we begin to emerge from the shadows of the recent past.
While it’s nearly impossible to detail all the magical moments that filled the festival’s ten days, some highlights genuinely stood out. The festival unfurled with a tribute to Louis Armstrong, the legendary son of New Orleans, by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This nostalgic performance set a harmonious tone for the rest of the event, reminding us of the roots of this cultural phenomenon.

Highly-anticipated performances from internationally-acclaimed artists, such as H.E.R., Foo Fighters, Lizzo, and Trombone Shorty, captivated audiences with their electrifying performances. The crowd’s reaction was palpable, filled with excitement, as the Foo Fighters delivered an incredibly energetic performance featuring a surprise jam session with Trombone Shorty that was nothing short of spectacular.
But the surprise sensation of the festival was the local brass band, The Soul Rebels, whose explosive performance truly embodied the spirit of New Orleans. Their set, a melting pot of Jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, and rock, coupled with their infectious energy, was the perfect testament to the city’s vibrant musical heritage.
Yet, Jazz Fest isn’t just about the music. Food is a massive part of the festival experience. The air was ripe with the mouthwatering aromas of crawfish étouffée, jambalaya, po’boys, and other delicacies that define the culinary richness of New Orleans. Local vendors served up traditional Cajun and Creole dishes that had festival-goers lining up for seconds, a feast for the palate complementing the symphony for the ears.
The 2023 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was an inspiring testament to the resilient spirit of the city and its people. The passion and energy were infectious, as the festival welcomed music lovers back with open arms. This year’s event was not just a celebration of music and culture but also a beacon of hope, signifying brighter and more tuneful days ahead. It was a melodic reminder that even in the face of challenges, New Orleans’ heart – the music, the food, the arts, and the community – continues to beat strong.
