Drew eventually attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada, earning his M.D. and Master of Surgery degrees in 1933. While at McGill, Drew developed an interest in blood transfusion, publishing his first scientific paper in 1932. He later completed his residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, where he continued researching blood preservation.

In 1938, Drew was awarded a fellowship at Columbia University in New York City, where he worked under Dr. John Scudder, a renowned blood transfusion researcher. Drew’s groundbreaking blood storage and processing work formed the basis for his doctoral thesis, “Banked Blood: A Study in Blood Preservation.” This research led to the development of a method for preserving blood plasma, which involved separating red blood cells from the liquid plasma and storing it separately, enabling more extended storage periods.

World War II and the Blood for Britain Project

As World War II raged in Europe, Drew was appointed as the medical supervisor for the Blood for Britain project, which aimed to supply the British with much-needed blood supplies. Under his leadership, the project collected and shipped over 14,000 units of blood plasma across the Atlantic. Drew’s blood preservation and processing expertise proved invaluable during the war, as his methods were widely adopted by both the US and British military.

American Red Cross and Racial Discrimination

In 1941, Drew was appointed the first director of the American Red Cross Blood Bank. However, racial discrimination persisted during this time, and the US military insisted on segregating blood based on the race of the donor. Drew, who was well aware that there was no scientific basis for such segregation, vehemently opposed this policy. He eventually resigned from his position in protest.

Later Life and Legacy

Drew returned to Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he continued his career as a surgeon, teacher, and researcher. Tragically, his life was cut short in a car accident in 1950 at the age of 45.
