The heartbeat of Creole culture came alive once again at the 2024 Creole Renaissance Festival, held on Sunday, September 1st, at the Rayne Civic Center & Pavilion in the vibrant city of Rayne, Louisiana. This family-friendly celebration—now a beloved tradition—brought together the rich threads of Creole music, food, and culture in a day bursting with joy, rhythm, and heartfelt remembrance.
Kreol Magazine was honoured to attend and experience this cultural explosion firsthand. With Keith Frank at the helm—both as the festival’s driving force and headline act—this year’s event proved once again why it has grown into one of the most anticipated Creole gatherings in the state.
Keith Frank, frontman of Keith Frank & The Soileau Zydeco Band, is not just a performer—he’s a cultural force. As featured on the cover of Issue 38 of Kreol Magazine, Keith raises the bar each year, bringing authenticity, soul, and an unmatched energy that defines the festival experience. His deep commitment to preserving Creole traditions and elevating Zydeco music is the very spirit of the festival. Year after year, he continues to grow this event with integrity, heart, and a lot of rhythm.
A Lineup That Brought the House Down
The musical lineup was nothing short of legendary. Audiences danced and swayed to electrifying performances by Next Gen Zydeco, Mike Broussard & Nu Edition Zydeco, Preston Frank, Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws, J. Paul & The Zydeco NuBreedz, The Return of Boozoo Chavis’ Magic Sounds featuring Poncho Chavis and The Zydeco Force Reunion
Each act brought a different flavour to the stage, yet they all shared the same mission: to celebrate and carry forward the deep roots of Creole Zydeco music.
Food from the Heart: The Soul of the Festival
One of the Creole Renaissance Festival’s most defining features is its unwavering dedication to Creole culinary tradition—and that means food is not just an afterthought; it’s a cornerstone. As always, only one vendor was allowed to serve food, per the festival’s strict commitment to authenticity. Bryant Fuselier, better known as the “Louisiana Sauce Boss,” proudly filled that role.
Bryant has been with the festival since its inception, dishing out unforgettable flavours that reflect the very spirit of Louisiana’s Creole soul. His food is more than just a meal—it’s a cultural offering seasoned with tradition, history, and heart.
At the 2024 festival, his wife, Mrs. Melinda Guillory Fuselier, supported him every step of the way. She could be seen serving plates, assisting guests, and managing the stand with her trademark warmth and energy. Melinda’s presence was essential to the experience. She helped keep things running smoothly and shared smiles with every customer she greeted.
Tragically, Melinda passed away on March 22, 2025, just months after the 2024 festival. While she was very much a part of the most recent celebration, her absence will be deeply felt at future gatherings. Her support, kindness, and dedication to preserving Creole tradition alongside her husband will be missed by all who knew her.
As we look ahead to the next Creole Renaissance Festival later this year, Melinda’s spirit will undoubtedly live on in the aroma of the gumbo, the rhythm of the music, and the joy shared among festival-goers she helped serve with such grace.
The 2024 Creole Renaissance Festival reminded us that Creole culture is not just alive but thriving. The festival remains a beacon of tradition, joy, and love thanks to Keith Frank’s unwavering leadership, Bryant Fuselier’s soul-filled dedication, and Melinda’s cherished memory.
