The Rencontres Créoles des Seychelles, featuring representatives from Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues, and Madagascar, held from March 4 to 8, 2024, at the Seychelles International Conference Centre, marked an extraordinary celebration of Creole culture and its diverse expressions. The event, a sequel to the “Rencontres Créoles de Victoria” from two years prior, unfolded over a week, featuring a rich tapestry of conferences and culminating in a grand musical co-creation that left an indelible mark on all who attended.
Organized by the Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts, this year’s edition saw an expansion in participation, including representatives from Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues, and Madagascar. This gathering underscored the vibrancy and resilience of Creole cultures, bringing to the fore their significance in the contemporary global landscape.
Secretary General David André articulated the event’s ethos: “Creole culture occupies an important place in today’s world because it promotes unity, solidarity, tolerance, peace, and harmony.” André’s vision for the Rencontres Créoles des Seychelles was clear – to amplify the Creolwwe voice globally, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of its values.
The conference portion of the event delved into crucial discussions on creolization, identity formation, and the synthesis of diverse cultural influences. With Creole cultures and languages being the focus of academic research, the conference aimed to transform the discourse on cultural values, promoting an inclusive approach to reducing prejudices against Creoles. André’s commitment to stimulating debate was evident as he emphasized the importance of dialogue in shaping social relations and understanding Creole identities.
The musical co-creation segment, produced by Jimmy Savy and coordinated by Ambassador Patrick Victor, was a highlight, showcasing the talents of artists Jean-Marc Volcy, Brian Matombé, Sanley Monnaie, Tania, Savoca, Tony, and Stephan Rezannah, among others. This collaborative effort aimed to create a regional anthem that reflects the shared Creole heritage, integrating local musical elements and instruments.
The finale was a spectacular musical performance that saw individual and collective presentations from artists across the Creole world, including Sanley Monnaie (Seychelles), Vallen Pierrelouis (Rodrigues), Rajery (Madagascar), Davy Sicard (La Reunion), Eric Triton (Mauritius), Gerard Louis (Mauritius), Brian Matombé (Seychelles), Jean-Marc Volcy (Seychelles), Belinda Moncherie (Seychelles), Tania Jeremy (Seychelles), and Sandra Esparon (Seychelles). The production, led by Jimmy Savy with artistic direction by Patrick Victor and musical arrangements by Tony Julie and Gerard Louis, was a testament to the rich musical heritage of the Creole world.
The Rencontres Créoles des Seychelles 2024 celebrated the Creole culture and paved the way for its recognition as an integral part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. It highlighted the ongoing efforts towards the possible inscription of Creole Cultures on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO, a vision supported by the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, Mr José Maria Neves.
